Modern wild rice cultivation

Since the 1980´s, worldwide demand for wild rice has risen so much that it is now grown as a cultivated crop in the USA. Particularly in California and the lake districts of Minnesota, wild rice is cultivated using the most modern farming methods.

The seeds are sown on flooded fields, where the plants remain underwater until about six weeks before harvesting. The exact time of the harvest in September is determined by computer analysis. The fields are then drained and the wild rice harvested by combine harvesters.

The grains are cleaned and sterilised at 230°C before being sorted and packed.

These modern harvesting procedures and constant monitoring techniques guarantee that USA wild rice meets the highest quality requirements and standards – and appeals to gourmets all over the world!
